Sitting in the basement the other day, I observed one of the ironies of parenting. As you can see in the picture, Sam's games are perched on the highest shelf about 7 feet above Sam level.
This was not pre-meditated. I just started putting 1 or 2 of them up there so he couldn't dump them out and make a mess. Perhaps this is a cruel storage strategy. However, I still think this is better than many basements or playrooms I have seen where all of the toys have been dumped and co-mingled so extensively that they are no longer of any use until the parents dedicate the semi-annual Saturday to a full clean-up.

we do the same thing, no need for any guilt.
the problems: you tend to run out of storage areas that are that high, and also as they grow taller they can reach more areas and cause more mayhem.
